1. What is martial art?
- Martial art can best be explained in two categories, which are: Martial, which basically means military, or warlike. Whereas, the word Art can be defined as skill and ability. In general, martial art is an ability to skillfully overcome a hostile situation.
2. What is the best style?
- There is no best style. There are many styles available and depending on what you are looking for should better direct you in making the correct decision.
3. Is Chinese Goju helpful against street attacks?
- No doubt! Chinese Goju practitioners learn practical self defense applications that work against all violent approaches and any position within the critical distance.
4. How often do you participate in tournaments?
- Our academy does not focus on tournaments, or make it a concentrated method of teaching in our dojo. Our primary goal is to teach martial arts for defensive purposes. However, we occasionally participate in tournaments for camaraderie and to display discipline in sportmanship .
5. What makes Chinese Goju different from other martial arts?
- This is a question you will have to answer on your own. There are many benefits in learning Chinese Goju, which is a well rounded discipline that introduces discipline, focus, balance, harmony, and improves confidence, body tone, reflexes, flexibilty and self-esteem.
6. Are the students required to bow to the instructor?
- The Chinese Goju Academy does not allow students to bow to the instructor. We believe in rendering respect to each other at all ranks to show equality. No one is greater than the next, as we are all students growing to maximum potential and knowledge. We render respect to each other as a form of respect, humilty and peace.
7. How should I go about choosing a school?
- Never make hasty decisions based on convenience. Take time to research the school of interst and the instructors credentials. Furthermore, observe the class if possible during your assessment. Remember, anyone can say their a black belt and purchase a certificate.
8. Do I have to be in shape prior to starting the class?
- Absolutely Not! Our job is to condition your body and instill the discipline needed to tone and develop your body.
9. Can Chinese Goju improve my fitness level?
- Most definitely, our training sessions are both mentally and physically challenging. Fitness levels usually increase at a rapid rate.
10. At what age should I give up considering enrollment in martial arts?
- This depends on your health. We’ve had students start between the ages of 55 through 62 years of age. Everyone is encouraged to inform their physician of their intent to begin our rigorous training program prior to enrollment. If you suffer from heart, respiratory, frail bone, or joint problems please address all health issus to your instructor during the initial counseling session. Your health is very important to use, as should be for you.
11. What should I expect to pay for lessons?
- There is really no concrete price carved in stone for martial arts classes. However, keep in consideration school locations, as well as the history of the instructor. You can receive great quality instruction from an inexpensive school, as well as an expensive one. Observe first and be comfortale in making your final decision.
12. How long will it take me to become a Black Belt?
- This depends on your ability to learn and adapt to the system in detail. Usually, it takes a minimum of three years training.
13. Can a Black Belt be a teacher?
- This question is very controversial, as there are many Black belts calling themselves “Sensei”, which means “Teacher”. A Black Belt is a serious student and usually marks the beginning of total commitment to the martial arts. 1st and 2nd degree black belts can instruct classes as an instructor under the directives of a Sensei, or higher. A Sensei, is usually at 3rd degree black belt level.
14. What can I expect from my instructor?
- Expect to be trained to your maximum potential and posses all attributes of a well secure defender.
15. Is Chinese Goju a sport?
- NO! Chinese Goju is a disciplined martial arts system that instills defensive tactics in overcoming adverse situations.
16. What must I do to become a student?
- First, complete the online enrollment form and visit our class ten minutes prior to the class schedule for your intial welcoming by the instructor.
17. How can I get a uniform?
- Uniforms (Gi) are available for sale within the academy. Prices and other associated items are available on the Academy Store link. In the event a particular size is unavailable it will be order and available for purchase within ive days. Students are required to purchase a unifrom from the academy within four weeks of training. This helps to maintain uniformity among the ranks.
